CAMARILLO, Calif. — Major Crimes detectives with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office have launched a formal death investigation after an elderly resident passed away following a verbal confrontation with a neighbor in a residential Camarillo development, public safety officials announced.
The incident occurred during the evening hours of Thursday, August 6, 2026, in a quiet cul-de-sac located within the 900 block of Calabria Court in Camarillo.
According to official public safety notifications published by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, patrol deputies assigned to the Camarillo Police Station responded to emergency 911 calls at approximately 8:09 p.m. reporting an unresponsive 78-year-old male who was not breathing outside a residence.
First responders from the Ventura County Fire Department alongside emergency medical technicians from American Medical Response (AMR) rushed to the scene to initiate life-saving resuscitation efforts. Despite rapid medical intervention, the 78-year-old man could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Neighborhood Argument Leads to Fall and Major Crimes Response
As patrol deputies secured the Calabria Court scene and began interviewing witnesses, preliminary investigative findings revealed that a dispute had erupted between the decedent and a 69-year-old female neighbor immediately prior to the emergency dispatch call.
Investigators assigned to the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau, the Camarillo Investigations Unit, and the Sheriff’s Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) Unit were called out to take over the primary death investigation.
Preliminary evidence gathered by homicide detectives indicates that physical or verbal actions by the 69-year-old female party during the altercation may have directly caused the 78-year-old victim to fall onto the ground, leading to his sudden medical collapse.
The case is officially being classified and treated as a potential homicide pending the final, formal autopsy findings and toxicological analysis from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office. Medical examiners will determine whether physical trauma from the fall, underlying medical vulnerabilities, or acute stress caused by the confrontation served as the primary cause of death.
"On 08/06/2026, at approximately 8:09 PM, patrol deputies from the Camarillo Police Station responded to the 900 block of Calabria Court regarding a 78-year-old male subject not breathing. Ventura County Fire Department and AMR medical personnel also responded and provided medical aid to the subject. However, the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene," the Ventura County Sheriff's Office reported.
"During the preliminary investigation, patrol deputies learned there was a dispute between the decedent and a 69-year-old female neighbor just prior to the call for service. Investigators with the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau responded to assist and learned the female’s actions may have caused the decedent to fall to the ground. The death is being investigated as a potential homicide, pending the autopsy results from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office," Sheriff's officials confirmed in their official release prepared by Sergeant Francisco Jauregui.
