Eight Arrested in Rio de Janeiro Following Assault on Local Capybara

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro have arrested eight individuals following a violent incident involving a capybara in the Jardim Guanabara neighborhood.

The event, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, March 21, 2026, was captured on security camera footage.

The footage, which has since circulated on various social media platforms, shows a lone adult capybara being cornered by a group on the Orla do Quebra Coco waterfront promenade. The group consisted of six adult men and two minors.

According to official reports from the Civil Police, the suspects used wooden sticks, planks, and iron bars to strike the animal.

The capybara sustained multiple blows to the head during the unprovoked assault.

Witnesses who observed the incident or viewed the emerging footage alerted local law enforcement.

Following the attack, the injured animal retreated to a vacant lot nearby to seek shelter.

Veterinary teams later located the capybara and transported it to the Centro de Reabilitação de Animais Silvestres at Universidade Estácio de Sá.

Initial medical assessments revealed significant head trauma and nasal bleeding.

Medical staff reported that the animal was initially in critical condition and unable to stand.

However, updates from the rehabilitation center indicate that the capybara is now responding well to treatment.

The animal has regained the ability to stand and can consume food and water independently.

Veterinarians stated that while the animal is showing signs of recovery, it remains under close professional observation.

Investigating officers from the 37th Police Station utilized the surveillance footage to identify the suspects.

All eight individuals were apprehended in the nearby Guarabu community on the afternoon of March 21.

Local residents note that capybaras are common in the Jardim Guanabara area and are generally known for their docile nature.

The incident has prompted widespread discussion regarding urban wildlife protection.

The six adult suspects are facing charges related to animal cruelty, while the two minors were processed according to juvenile justice statutes.

All suspects reside within the local vicinity of the attack.
