He decorated his home to support Donald Trump. A brutal attack outside his front door took his life.

Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old Army veteran, died on Sunday after being beaten outside his Escondido home by a younger Navy veteran.

We should feel safe standing outside our own homes. But expressing our views can sometimes make us targets in a deeply divided country.

What Happened

On May 20, 69-year-old Kerry Sheron stood outside his home on Buchanan Street in Escondido, California. Police say a 32-year-old man named Thomas Caleb Butler came up and attacked him without warning.

A yard camera caught the attack. State lawyers say Butler hit Sheron in the jaw with a single punch. After Sheron fell, Butler kept hitting him on the head.

Sheron died in the hospital six days later.

Sheron was an Army veteran. Neighbors knew his home as the "Trump House" because it was covered in campaign signs and American flags. Butler is a Navy veteran who now faces major charges.

What the evidence shows

  • 1 yard camera video shows the suspect coming up and attacking Sheron outside his home.
  • 1 punch to the jaw knocked Sheron to the ground, followed by more hits to his head.
  • 6 days in the hospital in critical shape before Sheron died from severe head trauma.
  • 0 bail is allowed for Thomas Caleb Butler as he stays in jail.
  • Multiple damaged flags and torn signs from past attacks on the home.

The Bigger Question

We must ask ourselves what happens when campaign signs make people targets for violence. Have we lost the ability to live next to people we disagree with?

Sheron's wife believes his political views cost him his life. Even if police have not found a clear motive, the fear in this neighborhood is very real.

The Other Side

Thomas Caleb Butler has pleaded not guilty to charges including attempted murder and elder abuse. His defense has not yet shared his side of the story or why the fight started.

Based on the yard camera video and witness statements, the defense faces a very difficult fight in court.

What Happens Now

Since Sheron has died, state lawyers plan to upgrade the charges to murder. Butler will go back to court soon to face these new charges.

In the neighborhood, supporters are gathering outside the "Trump House" with flowers and flags. People on this quiet street say they no longer feel safe.

What We Still Don't Know

  1. Did the two men know each other before the attack?
  2. Did political beliefs play a role in why the suspect chose to attack Sheron?
  3. Will the state charge this as a hate crime?
