A sudden wall of fire raced toward their homes on Saturday.
The Lemon Fire grew to 300 acres near Palmdale, forcing families to flee as crews fought the flames from the air and ground.
Imagine looking out your window to see thick black smoke swallowing the sky. You realize you have only minutes to pack your life into a car. This was the reality for hundreds of local neighbors this weekend.
WHAT HAPPENED
A fast brush fire broke out just south of Palmdale on Saturday. It started just after 2:00 p.m. near the corner of Sierra and Pearlblossom highways.
The blaze, called the Lemon Fire, began at 50 acres. Within six hours, it grew to 300 acres, burning dry grass and threatening homes.
Crews rushed to the scene on the ground and in the air. Helicopters took water from a nearby lake to drop on the hot flames.
WHAT THE FIRE DATA SHOWS
Start time: Just after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday
- Fire size: Grew to 300 acres by 8:00 p.m.
- Control level: Fire crews kept 47 percent of the fire from spreading
- Safe zone: Antelope Valley YMCA in Lancaster took in people who fled
- Crew size: Both LA County and state crews joined the fight
THE BIGGER QUESTION
Every year, these fast fires strike closer to our homes. Are our local towns ready for a future with more dry heat and fast flames?
We must ask if our emergency warning systems work fast enough to get everyone out when minutes count.
THE OTHER SIDE
State officials say these quick orders to leave save lives. Some residents worry that leaving too fast puts their pets or homes at risk. Still, safety experts say that leaving early is always the best choice when dry winds blow.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW
Fled families are waiting at the YMCA shelter to hear when they can go home. Neighbors with farm animals face a tough time finding safe spots for them.
Crews will stay on the scene to clear lines around the fire and put out hot spots.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW
- What started the Lemon Fire near the highway?
- Did any homes get damaged by the smoke or flames?
- When will it be safe for families to return home?
