Father Arrested After L.A. County Freeway Pursuit With 6-Year-Old Child in Van

A high-stakes freeway pursuit across Orange County and Los Angeles County ended in Compton Wednesday after police say a father allegedly took his 6-year-old child without legal custody and fled in a van.

The incident began in Anaheim after police received a report from a mother who said her estranged boyfriend, who is the father of her two children, arrived at her home and attempted to take them despite not having legal custody.

According to the Anaheim Police Department, one child left with the father while another child remained at the residence. Authorities have not said whether the 6-year-old went willingly or was taken by force.

Police said the father fled in a small white van with the child inside. Officers later located the vehicle on the 91 Freeway in Buena Park and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, which turned into a pursuit.

The chase continued westbound through several cities, including Bellflower and areas near Long Beach, with Anaheim police and California Highway Patrol officers following the vehicle.

During the pursuit, authorities said the father stopped the van and was seen holding a backpack. Police allege he threw the backpack from a 91 Freeway overpass onto a vehicle traveling below.

According to investigators, the driver and passenger of that vehicle recovered the backpack and drove away. A police helicopter tracked the second vehicle, allowing officers to later stop it and arrest both occupants.

Authorities said officers found a firearm and narcotics inside the recovered backpack.

Officials described the situation as a rapidly developing investigation involving multiple agencies. Police said the priority throughout the pursuit was protecting the child and preventing additional danger to drivers traveling on the freeway.

“The child inside the van was located safely and returned to the mother,” authorities said following the pursuit.

The pursuit eventually ended when the father stopped the van on a freeway overpass along the westbound 91 Freeway in Compton. Police said he surrendered and was taken into custody.

“The suspect was taken into custody without further incident,” investigators said as they continued processing evidence from the scene.

The 6-year-old child was found unharmed and was later reunited with the child’s mother.
