He pleaded guilty to stealing $1.2 billion from seniors, then ran away to an island paradise.

Federal agents caught Herbert Leon Kimble in the Philippines after two years on the run.

When someone steals from the safety net meant for our grandparents, they steal from all of us. It is worse when they admit to the crime and then run away to avoid prison.

What Happened

Federal agents just caught sixty-year-old Herbert Leon Kimble in the Philippines. He had been running from the law for nearly two years.

Officials say Kimble ran a massive medical scam between 2014 and 2019. His crew used call centers to trick elderly patients into getting back braces they did not need.

Kimble admitted to his crimes in 2019 but skipped his court date in 2024. He became one of the first people on the FBI's new list of most wanted fraudsters.

What the money/evidence shows

  • $1.2 billion in fake Medicare charges.
  • 5 years spent running the call center scheme.
  • 2 years spent hiding from the law overseas.
  • 6 federal crimes Kimble admitted to in 2019.
  • 2 fugitives caught from the new FBI list in two weeks.

The Bigger Question

How did a man who admitted to a massive billion-dollar fraud manage to slip out of the country so easily? We must ask if our courts do enough to keep track of wealthy criminals before they are sent to prison.

The Other Side

While Kimble has not made a public statement since his arrest, his lawyers may argue he returned without a fight. Yet, since he already pleaded guilty to the crimes in 2019, any defense against the fraud itself is very weak.

What Happens Now

Kimble is now back in the United States to face a judge. His return shows that hiding overseas is getting much harder for people who steal public money.

What We Still Don't Know

  • How did Kimble get a passport and flee the country after pleading guilty?
  • Did anyone help him hide in the Philippines for two years?
  • What will his final prison sentence be now that he ran away?
