In 2026 illegal immigration continues to represent a massive annual expense for American taxpayers.

This fiscal burden is driven by the undocumented population and does not include legal residents or U.S. citizens.

According to data from FAIR and the Department of Homeland Security each undocumented immigrant costs the American public approximately 8,776 dollars per year.

The total net cost to taxpayers in 2026 is estimated to fall between 150 billion and 182 billion dollars annually.

Even after subtracting the billions paid in taxes by undocumented individuals the American public remains responsible for over 150 billion dollars in net expenses.

The primary drivers of these costs include education for children including U.S. born kids medical care through emergency room visits law enforcement and welfare services used by these households.

Records from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy show that undocumented immigrants paid approximately 96.7 billion dollars in taxes in 2022 which was the last year for detailed figures.

However this contribution only covers roughly 17 to 30 percent of the total fiscal burden they create meaning taxpayers are still subsidizing the vast majority of the costs.

The largest groups of undocumented immigrants in 2026 include nationals from Mexico followed by Guatemala Honduras El Salvador and a rapidly growing population from Venezuela.

Costs remained at historic highs during 2023 and 2024 as illegal border crossings reached all time records before a shift in policy occurred.

Since President Trump took office in January 2025 illegal border crossings have reportedly dropped by over 90 percent in certain months according to CBP data.

The administration has claimed over 2.2 million self deportations and hundreds of thousands of official deportations have occurred since the start of 2025.

Because of this exodus the undocumented population has started to shrink in 2026 which suggests the taxpayer burden may finally begin to decrease in the coming years.

Despite the sharp drop in new crossings the net cost for 2026 is still running around 150 billion dollars as the existing population continues to utilize services.

This 150 billion dollar annual figure directly affects school funding hospital capacity and local police budgets across every state.

While undocumented immigrants do contribute to the tax pool the gap between their contributions and their costs remains a central point of debate in American politics.
