No child should be afraid to go to sleep in their own home.

Police say an 8-year-old Florida girl lived through months of fear, hunger, and violence before a neighbor's concern helped bring the situation to light.

WHAT HAPPENED

Miami police arrested 27-year-old Naseline Timouche on June 6 after officers conducted a welfare check at her apartment.

According to an arrest affidavit, officers found the girl with visible scars and marks on her face and body.

Investigators say the child told them her mother hit her with a frying pan, spatula, and charging cord. The girl also said she was often denied food and forced to eat expired items or food taken from the trash.

The investigation began after a neighbor spotted the child wandering outside alone and helped by giving her food and clean clothes.

  • Suspect is 27-year-old Naseline Timouche.

  • Police say the child had visible scars and injuries.
  • Charges include aggravated child abuse and child neglect.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

This case raises a hard question: how many abused children suffer in silence before someone notices?

It also shows the role neighbors can play. In this case, police became involved after a concerned resident saw something that did not seem right and stepped in to help.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Timouche faces charges of aggravated child abuse causing bodily harm and child neglect.

The child is expected to remain under the care and protection of child welfare authorities while the criminal case moves through the court system.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

How long do investigators believe the abuse lasted?

  • Were there previous reports made to child welfare agencies?
  • Where is the child currently being cared for?
