A Florida driver caused a major crash on Interstate 75 and then tried to hop into the waiting medical chopper.

When we get in our cars, we trust that help will arrive if the worst happens. But a late-night crash on a Florida highway turned into a bizarre fight for control of a rescue helicopter.

What Happened

Police say Riley Ferrer was driving his pickup truck north on Interstate 75 around midnight on Friday. He lost control of his truck, hit another car, and flipped into the woods.

Two people in the other car were badly hurt. First responders shut down the highway so a medical helicopter could land and fly them to a hospital.

While medics were busy trying to save the injured passengers, police say Ferrer tried to jump in and steal the helicopter. Officers caught him and put him in a patrol car, but they say he kept fighting them all the way to the hospital and the jail.

What the evidence shows

  • The crash happened around midnight on Friday on Interstate 75.
  • Two people suffered severe injuries in the crash.
  • Police arrested Riley Ferrer at the scene.
  • Ferrer faces three counts of resisting police and one count of burglary of an occupied vehicle.
  • He is held with no bond on the burglary charge and a $3,000 bond for resisting.

The Bigger Question

How do first responders keep scenes safe when a crisis turns chaotic? Helicopter crews are trained to save lives, not to fight off people trying to steal their aircraft.

This event shows how vulnerable our rescue workers can be when they are just trying to do their jobs.

The Other Side

We do not yet have a statement from Ferrer's lawyer. Reports say Ferrer believed he saw the anti-Christ before the crash, which suggests he may have been having a mental health crisis.

What Happens Now

Ferrer remains in the Hernando County Jail without bond. The highway has reopened, but the crash leaves two people dealing with severe injuries.

This case could lead to tighter safety rules for medical helicopters when they land on busy public roads.

What We Still Don't Know

  1. How did the suspect get past crew members to reach the helicopter?
  2. What is the health status of the two people injured in the crash?
  3. Did drugs, alcohol, or a mental issue cause the suspect's behavior?
