A former collegiate swimmer from Hawaii faces serious criminal charges after allegedly launching an unprovoked, fatal attack on a security guard inside a West Maui resort office. Maui Police Department officers arrested 20-year-old Legend Storer of Lahaina on Thursday following a violent incident at a local condominium complex that left 63-year-old security officer Michael Dyer dead.
Storer has been formally charged with second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and indecent exposure. He remains in police custody at the Maui Police Department holding facility without bail, awaiting preliminary court proceedings as detectives work to piece together the events surrounding the sudden assault.
Surveillance Footage Records Violent Attack During Meal Break
According to law enforcement reports and investigative summaries released by the Maui Police Department, the violent encounter occurred in the early morning hours inside the main security office of the West Maui apartment and resort facility. Security guard Michael Dyer was sitting at his desk taking a scheduled meal break around 1:45 a.m. when an intruder forced entry into the private workspace.
Surveillance cameras positioned inside the security office captured clear video footage of a completely unclothed male entering the room and launching a sudden, violent physical assault against Dyer. The footage showed the suspect repeatedly striking and beating the security officer, leaving him with severe head and upper body trauma before fleeing the office area on foot.
Co-workers and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene shortly after the assault was discovered. Paramedics performed emergency life-saving procedures on Dyer, but he succumbed to his extensive injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Describing the tragic shock felt across the workplace community, one of Dyer's co-workers expressed grief over the sudden loss: "He was a great person and he was just in his office having a cheeseburger on his lunch break. And he had a wife that's a waitress at Leilani's and kids and his whole family lost him. It's horrible."
Suspect Located Naked Near Scene with Physical Abrasions
Following the discovery of the attack, Maui police officers initiated a search of the immediate surrounding residential streets and resort grounds. At approximately 3:30 a.m., patrol officers spotted a young man walking along a nearby roadway without any clothes on, displaying visible physical scratches and skin abrasions across his body.
Officers detained the individual, identified as Legend Storer, for public indecency and questioning. Detectives subsequently cross-referenced Storer's physical features and visible injuries with the high-definition security camera footage recovered from Dyer's office. After confirming a direct match between Storer and the attacker seen in the recording, officers placed him under arrest for murder.
Investigating officers noted that there was no known prior relationship between Storer and Dyer, and police have not identified any clear operational dispute or personal grievance that led to the confrontation.
"The attack appears completely unprovoked, and investigators are working to determine whether substance use or a sudden mental health crisis played a role in the suspect's actions," an investigating officer stated during a press briefing regarding the ongoing probe.
Background on Suspect and Victim
The suspect, Legend Storer, was previously a standout competitive athlete in Hawaii. He attended Maui Preparatory Academy, where he was a Maui Interscholastic League champion swimmer and a state runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Hawaii LSC State Championships.
Following high school, Storer moved to California to pursue higher education and college athletics. He swam one season for Concordia University Irvine, helping the school win a conference championship before the institution discontinued its competitive swimming program. Storer had recently returned to his hometown of Lahaina.
The victim, Michael Dyer, was a long-time Maui resident who worked as a night security officer to support his family. He was well-known among resort staff and residents for his friendly demeanor and steady work ethic. Friends and colleagues remembered him as a devoted husband and father who was simply performing his daily work duties when the attack took place.
Next Steps in Legal Proceedings and Investigation
Maui County prosecutors prepare to present the formal charging documents before a district court magistrate. Due to the severe nature of the charges and the flight risk posed by the circumstances, prosecutors requested that Storer be remanded without bail pending his trial.
Investigators are waiting on full autopsy results from the Maui County Coroner’s Office to establish the exact cause of death and catalog the extent of Dyer's injuries. Additionally, detectives have requested forensic toxicology screens to determine if alcohol or controlled substances were present in Storer's system at the time of his arrest.
"Our team is leaving no stone unturned as we gather forensic evidence and review all surrounding security feeds," a police representative remarked. "We are dedicated to delivering justice for Michael Dyer's family and ensuring complete accountability for this senseless act."
