When we back a cause, we want fair debates. But a local race turned scary when a helper turned to threats of violence.
WHAT HAPPENE
D
Teha Delaruelle worked as a helper for Katrina deVille. DeVille is a Democrat running for Congress in Wisconsin.
The campaign quickly let Delaruelle go. DeVille said the helper was deeply troubled and made the race unsafe.
After that, Delaruelle posted videos online. In one video, she pointed to a board that said to kill local Republicans. She also called for a war of fear against her political rivals.
FACT BO
X
- 1 volunteer removed from a Wisconsin campaign.
- 1 month left until the August 11 primary vote.
- 2 videos posted online with threats of violence.
WHY IT MATTER
S
Elections are getting more unsafe for everyone. When helpers turn to violent threats, it makes it hard to run a clean race.
It also makes normal people feel unsafe just for sharing their views. This hurts how our local systems work.
WHAT HAPPENS NEX
T
Katrina deVille will still run in the primary on August 11. She wants to challenge Republican Rep. Tony Wied.
The campaign blocked the former helper from all web pages. It is not clear if local police will act.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNO
W
- Will police look into these online threats?
- How will this affect the primary vote in August?
- Where did the former helper get these ideas?
