Former President Biden Compares Attendee to Barack Obama During Syracuse University Visit

Former President Joe Biden returned to his alma mater, Syracuse University, on Tuesday for a ceremonial unveiling of his official portrait. The event, held at the College of Law’s Dineen Hall, took an unexpected turn during the former president's concluding remarks.
While addressing a crowd of students, faculty, and invited guests, Biden invited a Black man from the audience to join him on the stage. The man, whose identity has not been officially confirmed, stood beside the 46th President as the crowd looked on.
Biden gestured toward the individual and addressed the room with a brief comparison. “Doesn’t he look like Barack?” Biden asked the audience, referring to his former running mate and the 44th President, Barack Obama.
Footage of the interaction quickly surfaced on social media platforms, sparking a variety of interpretations and public discussions. The clip, captured by several attendees, shows the former president smiling while the man on stage appears to laugh along with the comment.
Public reaction to the exchange has been divided along familiar political lines. Some commentators characterized the moment as a lighthearted gesture intended to reflect on the Biden-Obama partnership.
However, others criticized the comparison, labeling it as an outdated or potentially insensitive remark centered on racial appearance. The incident occurred during Biden's first significant public return to the Syracuse campus in a decade.
The former president graduated from the Syracuse University College of Law in 1968. He was on campus Tuesday primarily to honor the installation of an oil-on-canvas portrait painted by artist Michael Shane Neal.
The current administration, led by President Donald Trump, has not issued a formal comment regarding the former president's appearance. Trump, who assumed office for his second term in January 2025, remains focused on federal legislative priorities in Washington.
University officials stated that the portrait ceremony was a private, invite-only event. The artwork is scheduled to be placed on permanent display within the Law Library Reading Room for public viewing starting later this week.
Despite the controversy surrounding his specific choice of words, the atmosphere at the university remained celebratory for the returning alumnus. Biden has frequently cited his time in Central New York as foundational to his long political career.
