Former Yale Janitor Shay Taylor-Allen Matches Into Top Residency at Same Hospital

A medical student has captured national attention after matching into her top-choice residency at the hospital where she once worked as a janitor. Shay Taylor-Allen, 32, announced her match into the Yale School of Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology following a decade of custodial service.

The announcement, made during the 2026 residency match cycle, marks a full-circle moment for the Connecticut native. She was born at Yale New Haven Hospital and began working there at age 18 to support her family while pursuing her studies.

For nearly ten years, Taylor-Allen cleaned patient rooms, psychiatric wards, and administrative offices. Despite the physical demands of her job and early advice to lower her academic goals, she persisted and eventually earned admission to Howard University.

On March 20, known as Match Day, Taylor-Allen discovered she would be returning to her hometown institution as a physician. She shared the news in an Instagram video that has since surpassed 3.7 million views.

The footage shows Taylor-Allen reacting with immense joy as she realizes she will spend the next chapter of her career in the same corridors she once maintained. Social media users have hailed her story as a testament to persistence.

Dr. Lisa Leffert, chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at Yale, officially welcomed Taylor-Allen to the team this week. Leffert noted that the department is thrilled to have the former staff member join their community of talented colleagues.

Taylor-Allen’s motivation deepened during college when her mother became ill. Observing the impact of medical advocacy firsthand inspired her to transition from facility maintenance to clinical practice to serve her community.

She is scheduled to graduate from Howard University in May 2026. She is expected to begin her clinical residency at Yale New Haven Hospital later this summer.

In her viral message, Taylor-Allen emphasized the need for representation in the medical field. She stated that patients are waiting for diverse voices and encouraged others to pursue their ambitions regardless of their starting point.
