Karmelo Anthony, 18, will spend 35 years in prison for stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf to death over tent space.

When a child goes to a high school track meet, they expect to race, cheer, and come home. No parent plans to leave with an empty seat in the car and a permanent hole in their heart.

WHAT HAPPENED

In 2025, a fight broke out at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. The argument was about space for a tent.

During the fight, 17-year-old Karmelo Anthony stabbed 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. Austin did not survive the attack.

On June 9, 2026, a jury sentenced Anthony to 35 years in prison for murder. Austin's mother, Megan Metcalf, told the court that while Anthony got 35 years, she received a lifetime sentence without her son.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS

The attack happened at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas in 2025.

  • The fight started over tent space.
  • Karmelo Anthony was 17 years old at the time of the stabbing.
  • Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense and sudden anger.
  • The jury rejected his claims and handed down a 35-year prison sentence on June 9, 2026.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

How does a dispute over something as small as tent space turn into a deadly stabbing? We must ask ourselves why our young people resort to such extreme violence so quickly.

Are we doing enough to teach teenagers how to calm down before anger turns fatal? This tragedy shows that a single moment of rage can ruin multiple lives forever.

THE OTHER SIDE

Anthony and his lawyers argued that he acted in self-defense. They claimed he acted out of sudden passion during the fight.

The jury did not find this argument strong based on the evidence and convicted him of murder.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Anthony will now start serving his 35-year prison term. For the students and families in Frisco, the pain of this loss remains.

Schools may look at tighter safety rules for sporting events to keep kids safe.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

Why did a simple argument over tent space escalate so quickly?

  • Were there warning signs or past conflicts between the two teens?
  • What tools can schools use to prevent weapons at track events?
