Gasoline Theft Targets Special Needs Student Transportation in Clovis Amid Rising Fuel Prices

Surveillance footage released by the Diamond Learning Center in Clovis, California, shows a man allegedly siphoning gasoline from a vehicle used to transport students with intellectual disabilities. The incident occurred Sunday in a gated parking lot, highlighting the impact of surging energy costs on local community services.
The video depicts an unidentified individual entering the lot and approaching a transport van. He is later seen fleeing with a large gas container, leaving two other containers behind at the scene after being interrupted or completing only a portion of the planned theft.
Isaac Jimenez, senior director at the Diamond Learning Center, confirmed the theft to local media. Jimenez noted that the suspect appeared prepared to take more fuel than what was successfully stolen, given the multiple extra containers found abandoned by the van.
Filling the center’s large transport vans costs approximately $100 per vehicle. Beyond the financial loss, the theft has caused significant operational disruptions for the center's students, who rely on the vehicles for daily transit to and from the facility.
Administrators have had to rearrange routes and contact parents to coordinate delayed pickup times. The center has filed a formal report with the Clovis Police Department as they seek to identify the suspect through the captured video evidence.
This incident follows a broader trend of fuel-related crimes in the region. Academic research and local history suggest that spikes in fuel prices often correlate with an increase in siphoning and theft from commercial and private vehicles.
The theft comes as California motorists face the highest fuel costs in the nation. According to data from the American Automobile Association, the average price for a gallon of gas in California reached $5.82 on Tuesday, a 30-cent increase from the previous week.
Current market pressures are being driven by global oil supply constraints linked to the ongoing American conflict with Iran. Domestically, the Trump administration and regional legislators are navigating the fallout of limited supply and closed refineries.
In response to the economic pressure, California lawmakers are debating potential relief measures. State Republicans have recently introduced legislation aimed at suspending the state’s gasoline tax to mitigate costs for residents and businesses across the Golden State.
