A 29-year-old man was arrested by police in Gainesville, Georgia, after allegedly smashing through the interior drywall of an adjoining closet to violently attack a 15-year-old girl inside a neighboring apartment. According to the Gainesville Police Department, suspect Obed Reyes broke into the victim's residence just before 10 p.m. while she was caring for two young family members, aged 5 and 7. Authorities confirmed that Reyes lived in the same apartment complex along Summit Street, but noted that he and the teenager were complete strangers.
Investigators stated that Reyes gained entry by physically punching and kicking a hole through the shared drywall connecting a neighboring closet to the family's unit. Once inside the residence, Reyes immediately confronted the 15-year-old victim, grabbing her by her hair and punching her multiple times in the head and body in front of the two young children. Despite suffering repeated physical blows, the courageous teenager managed to break free from her attacker's initial grip and fled into the exterior apartment breezeway while screaming loudly for help.
Reyes pursued the girl into the outdoor hallway, where the assault continued in full view of neighboring residents. Witnesses told emergency dispatchers that they saw Reyes dragging the victim across the floor by her hair and striking her while she screamed for assistance. During the physical struggle in the breezeway, police confirmed that "Reyes threatened to rape the teenager" while continuing his violent assault. Neighbors immediately contacted 911 to report the active home invasion and brutal attack.
Officers with the Gainesville Police Department arrived at the complex shortly after receiving multiple frantic calls. Upon pulling up to the building, responding officers witnessed the active assault occurring in the open breezeway and immediately intervened, physically separating Reyes from the victim and placing him under arrest at the scene. Paramedics evaluated the 15-year-old victim for physical injuries sustained during the struggle, while police secured the apartment to ensure the two younger children were uninjured.
Following his arrest, Reyes was transported to the Hall County Jail. Prosecutors officially charged him with burglary, aggravated assault, attempted rape, kidnapping, and two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree for committing the violent acts in the presence of minors. Jail booking records also indicate that federal immigration authorities are investigating Reyes's status as part of the ongoing booking process.
Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish praised the young victim's quick thinking and commended the surrounding community members for taking swift action to save her life. In a formal public statement, Chief Parrish noted that "the victim has a long road of recovery ahead following such traumatic events" and expressed gratitude toward the neighbors whose emergency calls allowed officers to arrive in time to prevent further injury. "I commend the witnesses' quick response of calling 911 to get our officers there in time," Parrish added regarding the rapid response that halted the attack.
The dramatic incident left complex residents rattled, with many expressing shock over how the suspect bypassed standard residential door and window locks by breaching interior apartment walls. Property management teams were notified to inspect the damaged structures and secure the residential units while law enforcement officers gathered forensic evidence from both apartments. Reyes remains held in detention without bond as formal court proceedings move forward in Hall County.
