They spent decades wondering who took their daughters. Now they got to look their killer in the eye.

Rex Heuermann will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to killing eight women near a New York beach.

For 17 years, families had to live with the pain of not knowing who killed their loved ones. On Wednesday, they finally got to look the monster in the eyes and tell him what he took.

WHAT HAPPENED

Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old home designer from New York City, was sentenced to life in prison. He admitted to killing eight women and leaving their bodies near Gilgo Beach.

In a packed courtroom, the families spoke of their deep pain and anger. One sister spoke of how Heuermann called her years ago to mock her and say he was letting her sister's body rot.

When given a chance to speak, Heuermann said almost nothing. The judge had to ask him if he was sorry, to which he quietly replied, "Yes I am."

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS

Heuermann pleaded guilty to killing 7 women and admitted to an 8th.

  • The killings took place over a span of 17 years.
  • His sentence has back-to-back life terms with no chance of release.
  • He must now talk with the FBI about his crimes.
  • The victims' bodies were all found near Gilgo Beach on Long Island.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

How does a man live a double life for nearly two decades without anyone noticing? Heuermann worked in the heart of New York, yet he secretly preyed on women for years.

This case forces us to ask how many other bad people are hiding in plain sight. It also shows how easy it is for people to ignore the safety of women who work on the streets.

THE OTHER SIDE

Heuermann did not fight the charges in court and chose to plead guilty. His only response in court was a short statement where he said his words would have no meaning. Given his full confession and plea deal, there is no real defense for his actions.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Heuermann is going to prison for the rest of his life with no chance of ever getting out. This brings some peace to the families, but they must still live with the loss of their loved ones.

Police are still looking into other cold cases in the area to see if he was involved.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. Why did it take police 17 years to catch him?
  2. Are there other victims who have not yet been found?
  3. What will he tell the FBI during their talks?
