Governor Newsom Discloses Former President Obama Support for California Redistricting Measure

California Governor Gavin Newsom has revealed that former President Barack Obama provided explicit support for Proposition 50, a redistricting measure that significantly altered the state’s congressional maps. In a recent interview with Axios, Newsom detailed a private conversation from last summer where the former president endorsed the strategy.

Newsom admitted he was initially hesitant to contact Obama regarding the proposal. He cited the former president’s long-standing public support for independent redistricting and his famous "when they go low, we go high" mantra as reasons for his concern.

According to the governor, Obama quickly dismissed those hesitations. Newsom recounted that the former president expressed immediate approval of the plan, stating he hoped the governor would move forward with the initiative.

Proposition 50 passed in November 2025 with approximately 65 percent of the vote. The measure was publicly framed as a necessary response to Republican-led redistricting efforts in Texas, with Newsom describing the move as "fighting fire with fire."

Political analysts suggest the resulting gerrymander could secure five additional seats for the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives. The impact of the new maps has already been felt within the current delegation.

Representative Darrell Issa, a prominent Republican, recently announced his retirement rather than seeking reelection in the redrawn 48th Congressional District. This shift highlights the immediate consequences of the new boundaries on the balance of power in Washington.

Newsom claimed the endorsement from Obama provided him with "moral authority" and "cover" for the move. He noted that the conversation shifted their professional relationship into a new phase of cooperation.

The two leaders were recently seen together at the funeral of Reverend Jesse Jackson. During the event, Obama made a public gesture of approval toward Newsom, which many observers interpreted as a signal of support for Newsom’s potential future political ambitions.

While President Donald Trump continues his current term in the White House, the revelation of this high-level coordination between Newsom and Obama underscores the intensifying strategic maneuvers ahead of the next national election cycle.
