A decades-long pattern of abuse culminated in court when a San Luis Obispo County Superior Court judge ensured a convicted sex offender will spend the remainder of his life behind bars.
On August 25, 2026, San Luis Obispo County Superior Court Judge Michael Frye sentenced 74-year-old George Rodriguez Recio of Grover Beach to 73 years to life in state prison. Recio had been convicted by a jury on June 3, 2026, of 20 felony counts for repeatedly sexually assaulting four female victims. Prosecutors presented evidence showing the abuse took place in Grover Beach over nearly 30 years, spanning from 1996 to 2024. Three of the victims were between the ages of 6 and 12 when the assaults occurred, while the fourth victim was 25.
In addition to the prison term, the court issued a criminal protective order prohibiting Recio from contacting any of the victims and ordered him to register as a sex offender for life. Three of the victims attended the sentencing hearing to deliver impact statements. A victim advocate read the youngest survivor's statement on her behalf, while another survivor directly confronted Recio in court:
"I am mad that you betrayed me and my trust. You were my friend. You were my Tío Pepe. Now you are my worst nightmare. You are the monster behind the closed door. Today, I create my own peace."

WHAT HAPPENS NOW
