GUATEMALA CITY — Guatemalan emergency agencies declared a nationwide orange alert late Monday evening after an eruptive phase at Volcán de Fuego escalated, sending ash plumes thousands of meters into the atmosphere and driving pyroclastic density currents down multiple ravines.
According to bulletins issued by the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH), the eruptive surge began during the morning hours of August 3 and steadily intensified over an 11-hour period. By nightfall, seismic amplitude readings (RSAM) and thermal monitoring indicated a transition into a highly explosive paroxysmal phase.
Live monitoring cameras and ground observations captured a lava fountain extending 200 to 300 meters above the summit crater, accompanied by incandescent block collapse and sustained pyroclastic flows. The superheated flows of gas, ash, and rock fragments descended 5 to 7 kilometers along the Seca, Ceniza, Taniluyá, Las Lajas, and Honda ravines on the volcano’s southwestern and southeastern flanks.
In response to the expanding hazard, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) elevated the emergency status to an Institutional Orange Alert the second-highest threat level—and initiated targeted preventive evacuations.
"An orange alert has been declared nationwide due to the eruption of the Fuego volcano," CONRED confirmed in an official statement, urging residents near hazard corridors to follow self-evacuation guidelines if conditions deteriorated.

Preventive Evacuations and Infrastructure Closures
Disaster management officials initiated the precautionary evacuation of approximately 50 families representing around 250 residents from the high-risk hamlets of El Porvenir and Las Lajitas. Evacuees were transferred to temporary shelters in Escuintla as emergency crews monitored atmospheric ash dispersion, which extended more than 80 kilometers southwest toward the Pacific coastline.
To mitigate risks to travelers, traffic authorities completely closed National Route 14 (RN-14), a primary highway connecting the southern coastal region to the historic UNESCO World Heritage site of Antigua Guatemala. The Ministry of Education additionally ordered the suspension of in-person school activities across exposed municipalities near the volcano’s perimeter.
"If an evacuation is ordered or conditions pose a risk to your life, follow the principle of self-evacuation," stated CONRED spokesperson Valeria Urizar during a public advisory.

Volcanology analysts note that the declaration of a nationwide orange alert and the relocation of approximately 250 individuals represent conservative, low-threshold protocols rather than evidence of an impending regional catastrophe. Following the June 2018 disaster, where delayed warnings during a severe paroxysm resulted in more than 200 fatalities in the village of San Miguel Los Lotes CONRED and INSIVUMEH adopted extremely risk-averse protocols. As a result, routine eruptive spikes now routinely trigger nationwide alerts, localized highway closures, and precautionary evacuations out of an abundance of caution, even though most phases subside naturally within a couple of days.
