Hayward Police Officer Charged with Protecting Illegal Brothel and Bribery

Benjamin Yarro, a 12-year veteran of the Hayward Police Department, faces serious criminal allegations following an investigation into local vice operations. Prosecutors claim the officer accepted bribes to protect an illegal brothel in California.
The operation was located on a quiet residential street and appeared to neighbors as a legitimate business. Investigators revealed the location allegedly functioned as a brothel while receiving direct protection from within the police force.
Charges against Yarro include receiving cash, sensitive law enforcement data, and sexual services from workers at the establishment. In return, the officer allegedly promised to shield the operation from legal scrutiny and raids.
Investigators cited surveillance and intercepted text messages as primary evidence. One message reportedly attributed to Yarro stated that he intended to protect the business rather than conduct enforcement actions against it.
Communications recovered by authorities show the woman managing the brothel allegedly referred to Yarro as a dirty cop. Yarro utilized both personal and department-issued phones to communicate with the establishment operators.
The officer reportedly provided specific warnings regarding upcoming police activity in the area. Furthermore, he allegedly offered to investigate rival operations to ensure the brothel maintained its standing without competition.
These actions reportedly allowed the business to continue activities without detection for an extended period. Public records note that Yarro is the brother-in-law of the current Hayward Police Chief.
The Hayward Police Department stated that criminal behavior will not be tolerated regardless of familial relationships. The department confirmed that the officer currently faces formal charges related to the bribery scheme.
Neighbors expressed surprise, noting that while traffic was observed, the true nature of the business was hidden. The location has since been closed and listed for sale following the investigation.
This case is part of a broader investigation into multiple illegal operations throughout the region. Officials are looking into the duration of the activity and whether others had knowledge of the arrangement.
Legal proceedings are expected to continue as the department conducts its own internal review of the matter.
