A high-speed pursuit that started in the High Desert and ended in eastern Los Angeles County turned deadly early Thursday morning after the fleeing driver crashed into a tree in Pomona, according to authorities.
The pursuit began shortly after 1:30 a.m. in Victorville after law enforcement attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation involving driving without headlights. Instead of stopping, the driver allegedly sped away, leading officers on a chase through several major freeways and surface streets.
The pursuit eventually ended in the 2700 block of Northtown Avenue near East Bonita Avenue in Pomona, where the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers attempted to pull over the vehicle in Victorville after noticing it was being driven without headlights.
Authorities said the driver refused to stop and continued through multiple roadways, including portions of Interstate 15, Interstate 215, Interstate 210, and Interstate 10 before exiting into Pomona.
During the pursuit, officials said the driver reached extremely high speeds.
KTLA reporter Aaron Myers said the CHP reported that the driver was traveling “more than 100 miles per hour at times.” Authorities said the vehicle reached speeds of more than 120 mph on freeways and around 80 mph on surface streets.
Video from the pursuit showed a vehicle traveling without lights while CHP officers followed behind.
The chase came to an end when the driver lost control near railroad tracks on Northtown Avenue. CHP officials said the vehicle’s speed and the roadway conditions contributed to the crash.
“The vehicle traversed some railroad tracks and due to the undulation of the railroad tracks, the vehicle at high speed lost control and ultimately crashed,” a CHP official explained during the investigation.
The vehicle, described as a blue Nissan Sentra, suffered major damage after striking the tree. Images from the scene showed the driver’s side of the vehicle heavily crushed.
