High Speed Pursuit: Police Chase Speeding SUV into Los Angeles

A wild high speed chase lit up the 101 Freeway on Tuesday night as officers tried to track down a reckless driver. The pursuit started in Ventura County and saw a blue SUV flying down the highway at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. This dangerous situation put countless drivers at risk as the suspect wove through traffic under the cover of a very foggy night.

🔦 Lights Out and No Plates

The whole mess began when deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office spotted a blue SUV that looked very suspicious. The vehicle was driving with its headlights completely blacked out which is a massive safety hazard on a busy freeway. To make things even more sketchy the SUV did not have any license plates at all.

When the deputies tried to pull the driver over they instead decided to floor it and take off. This lead to a pursuit that quickly crossed over from Ventura County and into Los Angeles County. Because the driver was speeding so fast and hitting such high numbers on the speedometer the California Highway Patrol was called in to take over the chase.

☁️ Foggy Skies and Dangerous Speeds

The California Highway Patrol intercepted the speeding SUV somewhere around Kanan Dume Road. By this time the driver was hitting speeds well over 100 miles per hour. This made the situation extremely dangerous for the officers involved and for every other car on the 101 Freeway.

To make things even more complicated the weather was not helping at all. A thick layer of low lying fog was settling over the area. This was a major problem because it meant that news helicopters and police air units could not track the car from the sky. For a while the pilot of SkyCal was overhead but eventually the weather forced them to return to base for safety reasons. This left the officers on the ground to handle the high speed chase without any help from the air.

💥 A Crashing Conclusion

While the chase was happening it was unclear if the driver was alone or where they were headed. Preliminary reports suggested the vehicle had out of state plates which added another layer of mystery to the whole thing. The chase continued past the San Fernando Valley and eventually moved far away from the coast.

The pursuit finally came to a dramatic end on Wednesday morning. The suspect ended up in a crash with a California Highway Patrol officer on the 15 Freeway way up north of the 138 Freeway in the Inland Empire. The impact was strong enough that the officer had to be transported to a local hospital as a precaution. Thankfully no other injuries were reported from the scene. The driver was taken into custody after the crash though their identity has not been released yet.
