High Wind Advisory Issued for Ventura and Los Angeles Counties

Residents across Southern California are being warned to batten down the hatches as a major wind event moves into the region. The National Weather Service in Oxnard has issued a Wind Advisory that is set to last through the middle of the week. With gusts expected to reach up to 55 miles per hour local officials are urging everyone to stay alert and prepare for potential damage to property and difficult travel conditions.
🚩 Dangerous Gusts and Heavy Soils
The advisory covers most coastal and valley areas of both Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Forecasters are predicting south to southeast winds blowing between 20 and 35 miles per hour with powerful gusts that could peak on Tuesday night and Wednesday. This is especially concerning because the soils in our area are currently very wet from recent rains.
When the ground is saturated like it is right now tree roots are much more likely to pull out of the soil. The risk of downed trees is very high and this could lead to power outages and blocked roads throughout the county. If you have any unsecured outdoor objects like patio furniture or holiday decorations now is the time to bring them inside or tie them down before they become dangerous flying debris.
🚗 Difficult Travel for High Profile Vehicles
If you are planning to drive during this window you should be prepared for a bumpy ride. High winds can make it very difficult to stay in your lane especially on the open freeways and canyon roads of Ventura County. This is particularly dangerous for people driving high profile vehicles like trucks and SUVs which act like sails in strong crosswinds.
The National Weather Service recommends using extra caution and keeping both hands on the wheel at all times. The winds are expected to stay strong until 3 p.m. on Thursday which means holiday travel plans could be impacted by the weather. Law enforcement and utility crews are standing by to respond to any emergencies caused by the wind as the storm system moves through the area.
