Highway 101 North of Ventura Reopens After Overturned Big Rig Causes Gridlock

Commuters traveling between Ventura and Santa Barbara faced a massive headache on Saturday morning as an overturned semi truck shut down all northbound lanes of Highway 101. The accident occurred in a narrow section of the freeway with no shoulders near Padre Juan Canyon Road. While the closure lasted for several hours, officials confirmed that the driver escaped without any injuries and no hazardous materials were spilled onto the roadway.

📍 Early Morning Crash Blocks All Lanes

The California Highway Patrol received the first call about the incident at 2 27 a.m. on December 27. Officers arrived to find a big rig lying on its side across the bridge section of the freeway, completely blocking the three northbound lanes. Because there was no room for traffic to pass, a hard closure was immediately initiated south of Padre Juan Canyon Road.

To keep traffic moving, the CHP diverted all northbound vehicles off the freeway at State Beaches Road. Motorists were sent on a detour along the Pacific Coast Highway and were eventually able to re-enter the 101 at Seacliff. The diversion caused significant backups for early morning travelers and those trying to reach the local beaches.

🚜 Heavy Duty Recovery and Cleanup

Clearing the wreckage was a complicated task that required the help of the Ventura County Fire Department and two specialized tow trucks. Crews brought in a heavy duty tow truck and another equipped with a rotator to carefully turn the massive semi upright without damaging the bridge structure. The truck was eventually towed away with major structural damage but fortunately its cargo remained contained within the trailer.

Once the truck was removed, the CHP had to spend several hours cleaning the roadway of debris and oil. The freeway did not fully reopen until 10 34 a.m. which was more than eight hours after the initial crash. The long duration of the closure was blamed on the difficult topography of the area and the time needed to divert the high volume of traffic.

💤 Investigation Into Driver Fatigue

The California Highway Patrol has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash. While a final determination has not been made, officers stated that neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor. Preliminary reports suggest that the male driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading him to lose control of the vehicle and strike the side of the bridge before flipping over.

The driver was fully cooperative with investigators and was allowed to leave the scene after giving his statement. This incident serves as a stark reminder for long haul truckers and holiday travelers alike to pull over if they feel drowsy. As the 101 remains a vital lifeline for the Central Coast, the CHP is emphasizing that safe driving is the only way to prevent these types of disruptive and dangerous accidents.
