Hollywood is too scared to tell the story of the man building our future

Netflix and Focus Features are the latest to reject a movie about OpenAI boss Sam Altman as the industry fears the power of AI.

We usually love movies about tech geniuses who change the world. But when the story hits too close to home, the biggest names in film are looking away.

WHAT HAPPENED

Director Luca Guadagnino made a movie called "Artificial." It looks at how Sam Altman rose to power and the fights that happened inside OpenAI.

First, Amazon MGM Studios walked away from the project. Now, Netflix and Focus Features have also said no.

The film is being called a "hot potato" in Hollywood. It seems nobody wants to be the one to tell this story while the real-world drama is still happening.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS

Movie Title: "Artificial"

  • Director: Luca Guadagnino
  • Main Subject: Sam Altman and the rise of OpenAI
  • Studios that passed: Amazon MGM, Netflix, and Focus Features
  • Potential Home: A24 has seen the film, but they have not agreed to buy it yet

THE BIGGER QUESTION

Why is Hollywood so nervous? Usually, a movie about a famous CEO is a big hit. But AI is different because it is changing how movies are made and who gets paid.

If a studio makes a movie that makes Sam Altman look bad, are they afraid of the tech world? We should ask if the people who own these studios are too close to the tech giants they are supposed to cover.

THE OTHER SIDE

Studios rarely explain why they pass on a film. They might just think the movie will not make enough money or that the script is not quite right. It is common for movies to move between many studios before they find a home.

However, having three major companies say no in a row suggests the topic is the real problem.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

If a smaller studio like A24 does not pick it up, this movie might never be seen by the public. This means we lose a chance to see a critical look at one of the most powerful people on Earth.

It shows that even in Hollywood, some stories are seen as too risky to tell right now. This could lead to fewer movies that challenge the people in charge of our future.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. What exactly happens in the movie that is making these big studios so nervous?
  2. Will Sam Altman or OpenAI try to stop the film from being released elsewhere?
  3. Is there any studio left with enough money and guts to take the risk?
