She stood between a gunman and her teenage son to save him. It cost her her life.
Jean Gragg, 40, was shot on her Indiana porch during a Facebook sale by an 18-year-old gunman.
We all want to believe our homes are safe. But a simple plan to sell a watch to a stranger ended with a mother making the ultimate sacrifice for her child.
WHAT HAPPENED
Jean Gragg was a 40-year-old mother who worked as a tax office manager. Her teenage son planned to sell a watch to a buyer he met on Facebook.
The son had sold items this way many times before. They met the buyer, 18-year-old John Ford, on their front porch just before 10 p.m.
During the meet-up, Ford pulled out a handgun. Gragg did not hesitate.
She stepped between her son and the gunman. She pushed the suspect off her property.
As Gragg walked back to her house, Ford shot at her. One bullet hit her in the head.
She was rushed to the hospital. Doctors later told the family she was brain-dead. She was taken off life support three days later.
What the evidence shows
- The shooting took place at 10 p.m. on June 10 on a porch near a local college.
- Home video cameras captured the suspect running away after Gragg fell.
- Police found the suspect at an apartment building 2 miles away.
- Officers found the gun thrown over a fence near that same building.
- The suspect admitted to police that he fired shots at the victim.
THE BIGGER QUESTION
Websites make buying and selling goods easy. But they also bring total strangers to our front doors late at night.
Are we doing enough to keep our kids safe during these sales? Many police stations now offer safe spots with cameras and bright lights.
This loss makes us ask if porch sales are ever worth the risk. Perhaps it is time to stop meeting buyers at our homes.
THE OTHER SIDE
John Ford faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and robbery. Police say Ford admitted to the shooting when they questioned him. His defense team has not yet made a public statement.
Based on the suspect's own words and the video evidence, the state has a very strong case.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW
Ford is being held in jail without bond. Gragg's family is left to mourn a mother who died saving her child.
This tragedy will likely push more towns to set up safe trade zones. For normal people, it is a sign that we must meet in public, well-lit areas.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW
- Why did the suspect fire his gun instead of just running away with the watch?
- Had the suspect targeted other online sellers before this night?
- Will social media sites add new safety features to check real names?
