Iran signs a peace deal, then threatens to cut off the world's oil

Just hours after a ceasefire with the U.S., Iran says the Strait of Hormuz is closed to all ships.

Imagine shaking hands on a peace deal, only to find out the other person is locking your front door on the way out. This move puts the world's energy supply at risk and could make life much more expensive for everyone.

WHAT HAPPENED

Iran’s top navy leaders just said they are closing the Strait of Hormuz. This is a tiny but vital water path where 20% of the world's oil travels every day.

The news came out on Saturday. It happened only a few hours after Iran and the U.S. signed a deal to stop fighting.

Iranian ships are now telling other boats to stay away. They claim they must close the path for their own safety. This happens while President Trump is also fighting with Italy’s leader, Giorgia Meloni, because she will not help with the war.

What the evidence shows

  • The Strait of Hormuz carries about 20 million barrels of oil every day.
  • The closure was announced right after a peace deal was signed.
  • Iranian naval ships are waiting to stop any vessel that tries to pass.
  • Oil markets are bracing for a massive jump in prices.
  • U.S. officials say they have not seen a physical wall of ships yet.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

Why would a country sign a peace deal and then immediately start a global fight? This move feels like a test to see if the U.S. will stay calm or start the war all over again.

It makes you wonder if the ceasefire was ever real. If Iran can turn off the world's oil like a faucet, they hold all the power in any talk about peace.

THE OTHER SIDE

Vice President Vance says there is no proof yet that Iran has actually blocked any ships. He thinks this might just be tough talk to scare the world.

While the threat is scary, the U.S. says the water is still open for now. However, the threat alone is enough to make gas prices go up at your local station.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

If the path stays closed, the cost of everything will go up. It is not just about gas for your car; it is about the cost to ship food and goods across the ocean.

This also makes the fight between the U.S. and its friends in Europe much worse. If allies like Italy do not help, the U.S. might have to face this oil crisis alone.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. Will Iran actually fire on a ship that tries to sail through?
  2. Did the peace deal have secret rules that we do not know about?
  3. How fast will gas prices rise if the ships stay stuck?
