A historic pool got a $14 million fix. Now officials say visitors tore it apart.

Six people face arrest and seven others face citations after a 350-foot gash damaged the newly rebuilt Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

We build monuments to remember our best moments. When those places are damaged, it feels like a hit to our shared history.

WHAT HAPPENED

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool recently got a big facelift. The project cost over $14 million and finished in June 2026. President Trump even picked the new blue liner himself.

But things quickly went wrong. The water turned green with algae and the blue coating began to peel off. Then, the pool had to be drained for repairs.

During these repairs, officials found a 350-foot slash in the liner. President Trump says people cut it with knives in the dark of night. Police have arrested six people and cited seven others.

WHAT THE MONEY/EVIDENCE SHOWS

Over $14 million: The cost to rebuild the pool.

  • 350 feet: The length of the slash in the pool liner.
  • 6 arrests and 7 citations: The number of people charged by Park Police.
  • June 2026: The month the pool reopened before the damage occurred.
  • 67 years old: The age of a former Olympic cyclist caught touching a loose piece of the liner.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

Was this a planned attack, or is it just a bad construction job? It is easy to blame vandals when things break. But we must ask if the quick, expensive rebuild was done right in the first place.

THE OTHER SIDE

Reports show some visitors were not trying to destroy the pool. They were just picking up loose pieces of blue sealant that were already floating in the water. One person stopped by police was a 67-year-old former Olympic cyclist who merely touched a loose piece of the liner.

This defense seems strong because the pool was already peeling and chipping before any arrests were made.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Workers must repair the pool and fix the grass around it. Taxpayers will likely have to help cover these new costs.

Visitors to Washington will see empty concrete instead of a beautiful pool this summer.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. Is there security camera footage of people slicing the liner?
  2. Did the $14 million repair job fail on its own before visitors touched it?
  3. Will the government release the evidence of chemical damage?
