A police shooting outside UCI Health in Los Alamitos left a machete-wielding suspect critically injured Wednesday morning after authorities say an alleged road-rage incident involving an emergency vehicle escalated into a pursuit.
The incident triggered a security lockdown at the medical facility as officers responded to the threat, but officials said no patients, hospital employees, or police personnel were hurt.
WHAT HAPPENED
According to authorities, the incident began shortly after 10 a.m. when Long Beach police officers responded to reports of a possible DUI and road-rage incident involving a Long Beach Fire Department paramedic vehicle that was transporting a patient.
Officers located the suspect vehicle in the 3700 block of Katella Avenue, leading to a pursuit.
Police said the driver eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Shortly before noon, an officer-involved shooting occurred near Cherry Street and Katella Avenue, outside UCI Health in Los Alamitos.
Authorities said the suspect was shirtless and allegedly armed with a machete when officers opened fire.
The suspect was struck by gunfire and transported for medical treatment in critical condition. His identity has not been released.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS
Authorities said no Long Beach Police Department personnel fired their weapons during the encounter. The shooting involved Los Alamitos police officers who responded after the suspect fled from the original pursuit.
Following the shooting, UCI Health was placed on lockdown as a precaution while officers secured the surrounding area.
SkyFOX footage showed multiple police vehicles and officers near the medical center as authorities investigated the scene.
UCI Health confirmed that operations continued during the incident and that patients and employees remained safe.
The hospital stated, “Caring for patients is our top priority at UCI Health — Los Alamitos. We are actively monitoring police activity in the area.”
The medical facility added, “UCI Health co-workers and patients are safe. Patient care remains uninterrupted.”
Investigators have not yet released additional details about what led to the confrontation or what actions occurred immediately before the shooting.
