A 68-year-old Florida man, widely recognized in his community for his seasonal work as a Santa Claus performer, was recently taken into custody.

Thomas Allen Hicks was identified by the Polk County Sheriff's Office as one of 19 individuals arrested during a comprehensive sting operation titled Operation Child Protector VIII.

Sheriff Grady Judd announced the arrests during a press conference, highlighting the disturbing nature of the investigation.

The operation focused specifically on identifying and apprehending individuals who use digital platforms to target and solicit minors for illicit sexual activity.

According to investigators, Hicks engaged in explicit digital communications with an undercover detective who was posing as the guardian of a 13-year-old girl.

The suspect allegedly offered financial compensation to meet the minor for sexual purposes, providing graphic descriptions of his intentions while claiming he would be gentle.

Authorities noted that Hicks held a professional role in marketing for a local behavioral health organization.

His public persona as a holiday figure has left many in the community shocked, as he was previously viewed as a respected local resident.

The investigation revealed that Hicks was not an isolated case within the broader sting.

In total, the operation resulted in 85 felony charges and eight misdemeanors across the group of 19 suspects.

These individuals face a variety of serious allegations, including human trafficking, the use of communication devices to facilitate felonies, and traveling to meet minors for unlawful purposes.

Sheriff Judd emphasized that the operation serves as a warning to those who believe they can hide behind anonymity online.

The department continues to prioritize the protection of children by actively monitoring digital spaces for predatory behavior.

Several of the arrested suspects were found to be traveling from outside the immediate Polk County area to facilitate these meetings.

The demographic of those apprehended included military veterans and married individuals, underscoring the widespread nature of the threat.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that evidence collected during the sting included nude photographs sent to undercover officers.

The case against Hicks and the other suspects remains ongoing as the judicial process begins in the Florida court system.
