An eight-year-old girl woke up to a stranger in her bedroom. Now police are hunting for him.

Police seek Tishawn Maile, 35, for a May 25 break-in and assault in the Bronx.

Your home is supposed to be the safest place on earth for your children. But early one morning in the Bronx, that safety was shattered in the worst way.

Police say a man broke into a home near De Reimer Avenue and Bussing Avenue. It happened just after 5 a.m. on May 25.

The man got in through a bedroom window. Inside, an eight-year-old girl was asleep in her bed.

She woke up to find a stranger exposing himself. The man then ran away on foot.

What the evidence shows

  • Suspect: Tishawn Maile, age 35.
  • Date and time: May 25, just after 5:00 a.m.
  • Location: Near De Reimer Avenue and Bussing Avenue, Bronx.
  • Entry point: A bedroom window.
  • Suspect clothing: Black sweater with white logo, black pants, gray skullcap, and black sneakers.

This case highlights a fear every parent shares. How do we keep our kids safe when we are asleep?

We often think of home safety as locks and alarms. But we must also ask how neighbors can watch out for each other to stop these acts.

At this time, Tishawn Maile has not been arrested or given a statement. No defense lawyer has spoken on his behalf yet.

Since police have not caught him, there is no defense argument to judge yet.

Police are searching for Maile. They are asking anyone with tips to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline.

For families in the area, there is a mix of fear and extra care as the search goes on.

What we still don't know

  1. How did the suspect choose this specific home and window?
  2. Did any cameras in the neighborhood catch his escape route?
  3. Has this suspect been linked to any other break-ins in the area?
