A biotech boss invited a man into his luxury high-rise. Days later, he fell 25 floors to his death.
Corey Hutterli faces second-degree murder charges after police found his hair and victim DNA at the Miami Beach condo.
We all want to feel safe in our own homes. But for one Miami man, opening his door to a guest led to a terrifying drop from a 25th-floor balcony.
WHAT HAPPENED
Justin Zelin was a successful biotech analyst. He lived in a 47-story tower in Miami Beach. On February 12, video cameras showed another man, Corey Hutterli, following him inside the building.
Three days later, Zelin called 911. He screamed at Hutterli to get away from him. Minutes later, Zelin's body hit the ground.
Police found a messy apartment with blood on the balcony. They arrested Hutterli on April 8. He now faces second-degree murder charges, which carry a life sentence.
What the evidence shows
- DNA from Justin Zelin was found on Corey Hutterli's jacket.
- Clumps of Hutterli's beard hair were left in the apartment.
- Blood spatters were found on the balcony rails.
- Police found ketamine inside Hutterli's bag.
- Zelin's body hit the ground eight minutes after the 911 call.
THE BIGGER QUESTION
How do we protect ourselves when the danger is already inside? This tragedy shows how quickly a private space can turn into a trap, leaving neighbors to wonder what really went on behind closed doors.
THE OTHER SIDE
Hutterli's lawyers say Zelin had a mental break. They claim Zelin was shouting that he was already dead before he jumped on his own.
But police found scratches on Hutterli's face, cuts on his hand, and his hair torn out, which makes the defense claim of a peaceful bystander hard to match with the physical struggle.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW
Hutterli is in jail awaiting trial for second-degree murder. This case has shaken the luxury tower community, where residents pay high prices for top security.
It shows that locks and cameras cannot stop violence if you let the threat inside.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW
How did Zelin and Hutterli first meet?
- What caused the fight to start three days after they arrived?
- Why did it take police nearly two months to make an arrest?
