A multi-vehicle crash on the 170 Freeway in North Hollywood sent one vehicle over the center divider and onto the opposite side of the freeway Tuesday morning, creating significant delays during the morning commute.
The collision was reported shortly before sunrise near the Oxnard Street off-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash left one vehicle overturned on the northbound side while several other vehicles remained on the southbound side.

The crash was reported at approximately 5:40 a.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2026, just south of the Oxnard Street off-ramp, according to the CHP traffic incident log.
Multiple vehicles were involved in the collision.
One of the vehicles overturned and crossed over the freeway's center divider before coming to rest on the northbound side of the 170 Freeway.
Three other vehicles involved in the crash remained in the far-left lanes on the southbound side.
The unusual position of the overturned vehicle required emergency crews to work across the freeway as they assessed the crash and began clearing the wreckage.

TRAFFIC BACKUP
The collision quickly created difficult conditions for drivers traveling southbound through North Hollywood.
The southbound side of the freeway was reduced to one lane while crews worked to remove the damaged vehicles and clear debris.
KTLA's Rich Prickett reported from Sky5 that the morning commute was already being heavily affected.
“It’s going to be a slow ride on the 170 for your morning commute,” Prickett said from above the crash scene.
He later described the traffic conditions as particularly difficult on the southbound side.
“The drive is already looking pretty rough here on the southbound side,” Prickett said. “The backup begins at Roscoe.”
The congestion stretched back toward Roscoe Boulevard as commuters encountered the reduced lanes.
Drivers who normally rely on the 170 Freeway through North Hollywood were advised to expect substantial delays and allow additional travel time.

“The good news is crews are already towing one of the vehicles,” the report indicated, suggesting that the physical cleanup could move faster than initially expected.
However, even if the wreckage was removed quickly, the accumulated traffic was expected to take considerably longer to dissipate.
Once a major freeway backup develops during the morning rush, clearing the crash does not immediately restore normal traffic conditions.
