Almost half of Muslim Americans view Hamas favorably as young Americans turn away from Israel
A new survey of over 12,000 Americans reveals a massive shift in support for both sides.
WHAT HAPPENED
A new poll by the Pew Research Center asked more than 12,000 Americans how they feel about the war. The results show a huge change in views, especially among young people and religious groups.
Nearly half of Muslim Americans, about 44%, said they have a good view of Hamas. At the same time, only 26% of Muslim Americans view the Israeli people in a positive way.
Young adults under 30 are also turning away from Israel. More than half of them view the Palestinian people well, while less than a third feel the same about Israelis.
FACT BOX
- 12,574 US adults took part in the poll from May 4 to May 17.
- 44% of Muslim Americans view Hamas favorably, compared to 8% of Catholics.
- 58% of Americans under 30 view Palestinians well, while only 32% view Israelis well.
- Only 16% of Democrats now support the Israeli government, down from 35% in 2022.
- 72% of young Democrats under 30 have a positive view of Palestinians.
WHY IT MATTERS
These numbers show that US support for Israel is no longer a sure thing. If young people keep these views as they grow up, American foreign policy could change forever.
It also shows deep gaps at home. Different religious groups in the US now see the same war in totally opposite ways, which could make peace harder to find.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Leaders from both parties will have to look at these numbers closely as the next election comes near. Candidates will need to find ways to talk to young voters who feel very differently than older ones.
Groups on both sides will likely step up their efforts to share their stories. They want to win back support from the American public.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW
- Will these strong feelings stay the same after the current war ends?
- How will these shifting views affect US funding and military aid to Israel?
- What do these deep divides mean for safety and peace inside American towns?
