A yearbook is meant to hold happy memories.
Instead, one New Jersey school is trying to explain how a photo of one of history's most hated figures ended up inside a book made for children.
WHAT HAPPENED
East Brook Middle School in Paramus, New Jersey, recalled its 2026 yearbooks after discovering an infant photo of Adolf Hitler had been placed in the student baby photos section.
Principal Ryan Aupperlee told families the mistake was found only after students had already received their copies. School staff quickly collected the books and began working with local law enforcement to investigate how the image was included.
In a letter to parents, Aupperlee called the incident "unacceptable" and said Hitler represents hatred, antisemitism, and the Holocaust, adding that the image has no place in a school publication.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS
The photo appeared in the student baby pictures section.
- Yearbooks were recalled after students received them.
- Police are assisting with the investigation.
- The school plans to issue corrected replacement yearbooks.
- Officials have not said who submitted the image or how it passed review.
THE BIGGER QUESTION
The biggest issue is not just how the photo got into the book. It is how it made it through the editing process without anyone catching it.
Schools rely on students, staff, and publishing companies to review yearbooks before printing. This case raises new questions about oversight and whether stronger review steps are needed before books reach students.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW
The school is preparing corrected yearbooks and deciding what to do with the recalled copies, including books that students had already signed.
The investigation will determine how the image was submitted, approved, and printed, and whether anyone will face discipline or criminal consequences.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW
Who submitted the photo?
- How did the image pass the yearbook review process?
- Will anyone face disciplinary or legal action?
