A three-year-old girl died from lice while her parents did nothing.

Matthew and Samantha Dylewski received up to four years in prison after their upstate New York home was condemned for horrific filth.

We expect parents to protect their children from the dangers of the world. But sometimes, the worst danger is inside the home, hidden behind closed doors.

WHAT HAPPENED

Joycelynn Ann Dylewski was only three years old when she died in her family's apartment in Corinth, New York.

Police found the little girl on February 19, 2025. Her body was covered in bugs, her teeth were rotting, and the home was piled high with trash.

Her parents, Matthew and Samantha Dylewski, pleaded guilty to careless behavior that caused her death. A judge sentenced both parents to serve 1.33 to 4 years in prison.

WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS

The home was so dirty that health officials condemned the property.

  • Joycelynn died from severe blood loss caused by a massive lice outbreak.
  • She also had a strong blood pressure drug, clonidine, in her body.
  • A cockroach fell out of her winter hat when police took it off.
  • Both parents received a prison term of 1.33 to 4 years.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

How does a child suffer this much in a local town without anyone noticing? Neighbors, family, and local groups are supposed to be a safety net for kids.

We must ask if our local systems do enough to check on families who cut themselves off. A three-year-old child cannot call for help, so we must watch out for them.

THE OTHER SIDE

Matthew Dylewski said in court that he wished he had died instead of his daughter and that he thinks about her constantly. The defense argued that the parents suffered from severe hoarding issues rather than a desire to hurt their child.

The physical evidence of long-term neglect shows that this excuse does not change the painful reality of what happened.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

This tragedy forces local groups to look closer at how they track homes with young children. People in the area are asking for better ways to report child danger before it is too late.

For the people of Corinth, the loss of this young life will leave a scar for a long time.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

Did any local social services get calls about this home before the death?

  • Why was the young girl given a strong blood pressure drug?
  • Did anyone else visit the home and see these conditions?
