He wore a delivery uniform to attack an online friend.

A 26-year-old Canadian gamer got two life prison terms for a brutal California home invasion.

We trust the people we meet online. But sometimes we do not know who is behind the screen.

WHAT HAPPENED

Devin Wolfgang Vanderhoef, 26, lived in Canada. He got obsessed with a woman he met on the web. He spent a year planning to attack her at her home in Salinas, California.

He bought knives, handcuffs, and tape. He flew to California with a friend, Darius White. Vanderhoef dressed in fake driver clothes and knocked on her door.

The woman’s boyfriend opened the door. Vanderhoef forced his way inside and stabbed him. The boyfriend fought back and stabbed Vanderhoef. Vanderhoef then choked the woman, but both victims lived.

What the evidence shows

  • 1 year spent planning the attack on the woman.
  • 2 life prison terms given to Vanderhoef, to be served back-to-back.
  • 3 types of gear bought for the crime: knives, handcuffs, and tape.
  • 1 helper who told police what happened in exchange for a lighter sentence.
  • 1 admission by the attacker that he went there to kill.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

How do we stay safe when anyone can find our front door? We share our lives online and think we are safe. This case shows how fast a web crush can turn into a real threat.

Should web platforms do more to track threats? We must ask how we can stop stalkers before they cross borders.

THE OTHER SIDE

Vanderhoef's team did not share a public defense. His friend testified against him, and police found the weapons he bought. With this proof, it was hard to argue he was innocent.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Vanderhoef will spend the rest of his life in prison. Local police are asking people to be careful with online friends.

The young couple survived but now must live with the trauma. Many people in the area may feel less safe when they get a package.

What we still don't know

  1. How did border agents miss his travel with weapons and handcuffs?
  2. Did the victim know how dangerous his obsession had become?
  3. What warning signs did the gaming site miss during their chats?
