An Ohio man has finally been convicted for a violent rape in an Oxnard hotel room that occurred nearly eight years ago.
Back in October 2018, 59-year-old Christopher Baum was staying in Oxnard when he turned an argument with a woman into a total nightmare.
According to prosecutors, the victim went to sleep following the dispute, only to wake up in the middle of the night with Baum on top of her.
The assault was reportedly so aggressive that the victim suffered significant physical pain and trauma.
After fleeing the scene and telling her friends what happened, she reported the incident to the Oxnard Police Department, initiating a years-long fight for justice.
A Ventura County jury has now found Baum guilty of the crimes.
Following the verdict, he is being held without bail as he awaits his formal sentencing. Despite the violent nature of the assault, the defendant currently faces a maximum of only eight years in state prison under current sentencing guidelines.
The conviction marks a significant win for the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office, which has been pushing for accountability in this case since the 2018 report.
Baum’s sentencing is expected to take place in the coming weeks, where the victim will have the opportunity to provide a statement to the court.
