An Orange County trainer was convicted after 11 dogs died in his care and were quickly cremated to cover up the crime.

Leaving a pet with a trainer is an act of deep trust. You expect them to come home happier, not to disappear forever in the back of a boiling van.

WHAT HAPPENED

Kwong Chun Sit ran the Happy K9 Academy in Irvine, California. Families paid him between $999 and $3,399 for boarding and training. In June 2025, Sit left 11 dogs inside small crates inside a hot van, where they died.

To hide what happened, Sit and his girlfriend, Tingfeng Liu, took the dead dogs to different cremating sites. Sit then sent text messages to the owners. He told them their pets died peacefully in their sleep and offered refunds.

Police looked into the case after a worried owner called them. Officers found the dogs' bodies before they could all be burned. Tests showed eight dogs died of heat stroke, and one puppy died from being beaten.

What the money/evidence shows

  • 11 dogs died in the care of Happy K9 Academy.
  • Owners paid between $999 and $3,399 for training services.
  • 8 dogs died of heat stroke, and 1 puppy died from blunt force trauma.
  • Sit faces up to 13 years and 11 months in prison.
  • Police caught the couple packed and ready to flee before their arrest.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

This tragedy makes us look at how we oversee pet businesses. Anyone can set up a website and call themselves a dog trainer. How do we make sure the people we trust with our pets are actually safe?

We need to ask why there are so few checks on boarding facilities. Until we have better rules, more families will face this kind of heartbreak.

THE OTHER SIDE

Sit and Liu's defense did not deny that the dogs died, but they tried to avoid the harshest penalties. However, police found them packed and ready to run away before they were caught.

This attempted flight makes any claim of a simple mistake look very weak.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Sit was convicted of 11 counts of animal cruelty and could spend nearly 14 years in prison. Liu faces up to four years for her role in the cover-up.

For pet owners in Orange County, this case is a harsh reminder to deeply research anyone who watches their animals.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

Why did Sit leave the dogs in the hot van in the first place?

  • What caused the blunt force trauma to the young puppy?
  • How did the cremating sites accept so many dogs without asking questions?
