Oropeza and her fiancé were heading home around 4 a.m. on October 24, 2026, when they witnessed the crash at The Moderne Bar on Colonial Drive in Orlando's Mills 50 district, according to WFTV Channel 9 and News 6 reporting cited by People and the New York Post.
The driver was in a black sport utility vehicle, according to the local reports. Oropeza said she first saw the vehicle traveling on the opposite side of the road before it slowly veered into the bar.
The vehicle smashed through the restaurant's outdoor dining area, destroying six tables and dozens of chairs and hitting a cement planter, according to the reports. Restaurant owner Michael Nguyen estimated that repairing the custom fence alone could cost up to $50,000, with total damage estimated at at least $50,000.
Halloween Party Return, Opposite Lane Driving, and Patio Crash
Footage from the restaurant's security cameras captured the SUV entering the patio area, according to the reports. Oropeza described the vehicle as smushing everything as it moved toward the front of the restaurant.
Oropeza was still wearing her banana costume when she alerted Orlando police to the incident, according to News 6. The cause of the crash and the driver's condition have not been confirmed in the reporting cited here, and the Orlando Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for additional information.
The Moderne Bar later shared footage of Oropeza calling authorities on Facebook, according to People. In that post, the restaurant said it was grateful no one was hurt, then said it was looking for the unnamed banana hero and had an appealing offer for them, adding that they had left before staff could thank them.
Viral Video, AI Doubts, and Free Meal Thanks
Nguyen, who posted the clip online, said many viewers questioned whether the footage was real. He told News 6: "They were like, 'Is this AI? Like, are you messing with us?'"

Nguyen answered them directly, saying: "And I was like, 'No, no, this is really a rogue 4:30 a.m. banana just roaming the streets of Mills, just saving the day, reporting the incident.'"
Oropeza said she learned about the attention the next morning. She told the New York Post: "I woke up and I looked up if anyone posted about the crash and then see the headline is 'banana hero.'"
The restaurant later tracked Oropeza down and thanked her with a free meal, according to the reports. She joked that her superhero name should be the "Banana Bandit."
Oropeza, who told WFTV Channel 9 she is going to school to become a nurse, said calling for help was instinct. She said: "I needed to at least call for help and make sure he was okay. I feel like that's the bare minimum that you can do as a decent human being these days."
Damage Estimate, Safety Barriers, and No Injuries
No one was injured in the crash, according to the reports. Nguyen was in Japan with his fiancée when he received a call from the city of Orlando about the crash, according to WFTV and Vice reporting cited by People.
Nguyen said he is looking into working with an architect to add more safety barriers outside the building, according to the reports. No charges against the driver have been confirmed in the reporting cited here.
Oropeza said of the response to her actions: "It feels nice. And I hope this all just can spread a better message that if you see someone in need."
