OXNARD, Calif. — An Oxnard man was arrested on multiple felony weapons violations Wednesday afternoon after allegedly brandishing a loaded handgun in the 400 block of West Esplanade Drive, public safety officials announced.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at approximately 5:00 p.m. in a heavily traveled commercial corridor near Esplanade Shopping Center.
According to an official media advisory released by the Oxnard Police Department, emergency dispatchers received an urgent call reporting that an adult male had brandished a firearm toward individuals in the 400 block of West Esplanade Drive. Patrol officers were dispatched immediately to canvass the area and contact the suspect.
Rapid Field Intervention and Firearm Recovery
Upon arriving at the scene, responding patrol officers located the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Oxnard resident Humberto Carrillo, seated inside a parked motor vehicle.
Officers established a tactical safety perimeter around the vehicle and made contact with Carrillo. During the field contact, officers confirmed that Carrillo was actively in possession of a firearm inside the automobile.
Patrol officers safely ordered Carrillo out of the vehicle and detained him without further incident.
A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a loaded handgun alongside an illegal high-capacity ammunition magazine. Officers seized both the firearm and the high-capacity magazine as evidence.
Carrillo was arrested on site and transported to police headquarters before being booked into the Ventura County Main Jail on multiple firearms possession charges, including brandishing a firearm and possession of an unpermitted high-capacity feeding device.
"On the above date and time, officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to a call of a subject who brandished a firearm at the above location. Officers made contact with the suspect, Carrillo, as he was seated in a vehicle," the Oxnard Police Department detailed in an official news release prepared by Commander Kevin Baysinger"
"Officers learned that he was in possession of a firearm. Officers detained Carrillo and took possession of the loaded firearm. Carrillo was also in possession of a high-capacity magazine. He was arrested for multiple firearms possession violations," police officials added in their official summary.
Proactive Police Response and Commercial Corridor Safety
Rapid emergency responses to reports of brandished firearms are critical in preventing potential active shooter scenarios or escalation into violent confrontations across busy commercial shopping districts.
Brandishing a firearm in public spaces poses an immediate threat to community safety and frequently triggers high-risk law enforcement responses.
Under California law, possessing high-capacity magazines capable of holding more than ten rounds of ammunition remains subject to strict statutory restrictions.
Because Esplanade Drive features heavy foot traffic from shoppers, restaurant patrons, and local retail workers throughout the late afternoon hours, responding patrol officers prioritized a quick and coordinated containment strategy to minimize any potential exposure to surrounding bystanders. By swiftly isolating the parked vehicle and securing the loaded weapon without incident, officers effectively neutralized a high-risk disturbance before it could escalate into an active public danger.
When patrol units locate and disarm individuals carrying loaded weapons in commercial hubs like West Esplanade Drive, they prevent potential violent escalations and remove illegal firearms from circulation.
The Oxnard Police Department continues to prioritize rapid deployment tactics and thorough weapons sweeps to ensure public safety throughout high-traffic business zones.
