Oxnard Police Major Crimes Unit Investigates Death of Man Found Unresponsive Following Hours-Long Standoff in Vehicle

OXNARD, Calif. — Major crimes detectives in Oxnard are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who was found unresponsive inside a vehicle following a hours-long standoff with law enforcement and mental health crisis negotiators on Monday afternoon, police officials reported.

The death investigation is being conducted by detectives assigned to the Oxnard Police Department Major Crimes Unit under official report number 26-70808.

Authorities are withholding the identity of the deceased man pending formal identification and next-of-kin notifications by the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Initial Suspicious Subject Call and Vehicle Standoff

According to an official incident advisory released by Oxnard Police Department Lead Detective Adam Aguilar, police dispatchers received emergency calls at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Monday, September 14, 2026.

Callers reported a suspicious male subject in possession of knives walking along the 300 block of Hill Street in Oxnard.

First-responding patrol officers arrived in the residential neighborhood and learned that the armed man had entered a parked passenger vehicle. The vehicle did not belong to the subject, and the vehicle's owner informed officers that the man was completely unknown to them.

When patrol officers attempted to establish contact with the man and instruct him to step out of the car, he was uncooperative and refused to comply with officer commands.

Officers observed a kitchen knife resting inside the vehicle's cabin directly adjacent to the subject.

Recognizing the potential for a mental health emergency, officers established a perimeter and summoned specialized crisis intervention units to de-escalate the situation without resorting to force.

De-escalation Efforts, Tactical Response, and Unresponsive Subject Recovery

For several hours, trained negotiators from the Oxnard Police Department Crisis Negotiations Team, along with clinicians from Ventura County’s Mobile Crisis Team, worked continuously to communicate with the man and encourage him to exit the vehicle safely.

To assist with scene monitoring and tactical support, members of the Oxnard Police Department SWAT Team, K9 Unit, and Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) drone team also deployed to the 300 block of Hill Street.

Negotiations continued throughout the afternoon into early evening. At approximately 6:00 p.m., officers positioned near the vehicle observed that the subject appeared motionless.

Tactical teams moved in and made physical contact with the man inside the vehicle, discovering that he was completely unconscious and unresponsive.

Officers immediately extricated the man from the automobile and initiated emergency life-saving measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), until medical personnel arrived.

Ambulance technicians rushed the man to a local hospital, where emergency room medical staff continued resuscitation efforts. However, despite medical intervention, the man was formally pronounced deceased at 6:34 p.m.

"Officers attempted contact with the subject, but he was uncooperative with the officers. A kitchen knife was also observed inside the vehicle adjacent to the subject... Several attempts were made to encourage the subject to exit the vehicle. Officers from OPD’s Crisis Negotiations Team were on scene, as was Ventura County’s Mobile Crisis Team," the Oxnard Police Department detailed in its official news release.

"At about 6:00PM, officers were able to make physical contact with the subject, who was unconscious and unresponsive. Officers immediately began life-saving measures including CPR... There was no force used upon this subject during this incident. The cause of death is unknown at this time," public safety officials emphasized.

Ongoing Major Crimes Inquiry and Investigator Contact Information

Oxnard Police Department executives confirmed that no lethal or non-lethal force was used by officers or tactical personnel at any point during the incident.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting a comprehensive autopsy, including toxicology analysis, to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Major Crimes Unit detectives remain on scene analyzing physical evidence, interviewing neighborhood witnesses, and reviewing footage captured by police body-worn cameras and uncrewed aerial systems.
