OXNARD, Calif. — An Oxnard man was taken into custody Thursday evening on multiple felony firearm charges after patrol officers investigating reports of gunshots and a hit-and-run traffic collision discovered two loaded handguns inside his vehicle, public safety officials announced.
The incident occurred during the early evening hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026, at approximately 6:40 p.m. near the intersection of Joliet Place and Oneida Place in Oxnard.
According to an official news release published by the Oxnard Police Department, emergency dispatchers received multiple urgent calls from neighborhood residents reporting the sound of gunfire in the residential area. Patrol officers were dispatched immediately to canvass the neighborhood for suspects, victims, or physical evidence.
Hit-and-Run Investigation and Firearms Discovery
Upon arriving at the scene near Joliet Place and Oneida Place, responding officers located an individual who was actively involved in a hit-and-run traffic collision. Officers immediately initiated an investigation into the vehicle crash to determine the sequence of events and assess whether any injuries had occurred.
While officers were conducting their preliminary traffic inquiry, additional community members approached law enforcement on scene to report finding spent bullet shell casings nearby in the 1500 block of Gina Drive.
Recognizing the close spatial and temporal proximity between the reports of gunfire on Gina Drive and the hit-and-run collision at Joliet Place and Oneida Place, investigating officers formed a reasonable suspicion that the two incidents were directly related.
Acting on these investigative leads, officers conducted a thorough search of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run collision. During the search, officers located and seized two loaded handguns from inside the automobile.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 24-year-old Oxnard resident Christian Antonio Vargas-Alvarado, was placed under arrest without further incident.
"On the above date and time, officers from the Oxnard Police Department responded to a report of gunshots heard in the area of Joliet Pl and Oneida Pl. When officers arrived, they located an individual who was involved in a hit-and-run collision," the Oxnard Police Department detailed in an official media release prepared by Commander Jaime Miranda.
"As officers were investigating the hit-and-run incident, additional citizens reported finding spent bullet casings in the 1500 block of Gina Dr. Believing the shooting and the hit-and-run were possibly related, officers conducted a search of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run and located two loaded handguns. The driver of the vehicle, Christian Antonio Vargas-Alvarado, was arrested for multiple firearms possession violations," police officials added in their public case summary.
