OXNARD, Calif. — Traffic collision investigators with the Oxnard Police Department are asking for public assistance following an early-morning crash that left a 40-year-old pedestrian in critical condition along a major commercial corridor, public safety officials announced Sunday.
The serious injury incident occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at approximately 4:58 a.m. at the intersection of Oxnard Boulevard and Ninth Street in downtown Oxnard.
According to an official news release published by the Oxnard Police Department, emergency dispatchers received urgent 911 calls reporting a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision. Patrol officers alongside Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel were dispatched to the scene immediately.
First Responder Medical Intervention and Emergency Transport
Upon arriving at the intersection within minutes of the dispatch call, Oxnard police officers located a 40-year-old male pedestrian lying unresponsive in the northbound travel lanes of Oxnard Boulevard. Officers also observed a 2001 Toyota Camry parked nearby at the scene of the impact.
Recognizing the severity of the victim's physical trauma, patrol officers immediately performed emergency lifesaving measures on the pedestrian until paramedics arrived on scene to take over advanced care.
Emergency medical technicians stabilized the victim before rushing him via ambulance to the trauma center at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) in Ventura. Hospital medical staff confirmed that the pedestrian remains listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
The names of both the pedestrian and the driver involved in the collision have been temporarily withheld by law enforcement pending family notifications and preliminary investigative reviews.
"Patrol Officers arrived and found a 40-year-old pedestrian laying on the northbound lanes of Oxnard Boulevard. A 2001 Toyota Camry was also on scene. Officers performed lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived. The pedestrian was taken to the Ventura County Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition," the Oxnard Police Department detailed in an official press release issued by Sergeant Juan Morales.
"Traffic Investigators responded and took over the investigation. Traffic Investigators believed the Toyota Camry was traveling northbound Oxnard Boulevard and the traffic collision took place when the pedestrian attempted to cross from the east sidewalk to west sidewalk of Oxnard Boulevard," police officials added in their initial findings summary.
Preliminary Traffic Investigation and Impairment Evaluation
Specialized investigators with the Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit responded to the scene, establishing a safety perimeter around the intersection of Oxnard Boulevard and Ninth Street to document physical evidence, measure skid marks, and collect potential security camera footage from adjacent business properties.
Preliminary investigative findings indicate that the 2001 Toyota Camry was traveling northbound on Oxnard Boulevard when the collision occurred. The pedestrian was actively attempting to cross Oxnard Boulevard from the east sidewalk toward the west sidewalk when he stepped into the path of the oncoming vehicle.
The driver of the Toyota Camry, identified as a 65-year-old male resident of Oxnard, remained at the scene following the impact and met directly with investigating officers.
Traffic officers evaluated the driver at the scene for any signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Officers determined that the driver was fully cooperative and showed no indications of driving under the influence, allowing him to be released from the scene without criminal charges pending the completion of the full collision report.
Pedestrian Safety Considerations along Commercial Corridors
Arterial thoroughfares such as Oxnard Boulevard present inherent safety challenges during early morning hours prior to sunrise. Reduced natural visibility, street lighting conditions, and vehicular travel speeds along multi-lane roadways increase the risk of severe collisions when pedestrians attempt mid-block crossings or traverse intersections outside designated signal phases.
Public safety agencies across Ventura County regularly emphasize the importance of pedestrian visibility, encouraging community members who walk near busy roadways during dawn, dusk, or dark hours to utilize marked crosswalks, wait for pedestrian traffic signals, and wear reflective clothing.
Oxnard Police Department traffic collision reconstructionists are continuing to examine environmental conditions, vehicle speeds, and sightlines at Ninth Street to build a comprehensive timeline of the crash.
