SANTA PAULA, Calif. — A joint agency law enforcement operation between the Port Hueneme Police Department and the Santa Paula Police Department led to the successful recovery of an illegal, hidden firearm, public safety officials announced.
K9 Giorgio (affectionately known as "George") and his handler, PHPD K9 Officer Joel Magana, were deployed to assist Santa Paula police officers during a specialized threats investigation and residential weapons search.
During the search, K9 Giorgio alerted officers to a concealed location where a firearm was hidden. The suspect targeted in the investigation is legally prohibited from possessing or owning firearms and currently faces multiple pending criminal cases in court.
Inter-Agency Collaboration Enhances Public Safety
The successful weapon recovery underscores the vital role specialized K9 units play in multi-jurisdictional law enforcement operations across Ventura County. Police dogs trained in firearm and article detection can locate concealed metallic objects, gunpowder, and weapons in areas human officers might easily miss.
By removing the firearm from a prohibited possessor, the joint operation prevented potential violent escalations connected to the ongoing criminal investigation.
"With the help of K9 George, they located a gun during the search. The suspect was a prohibited person from having firearms and had pending criminal cases. Public safety is teamwork!" the Port Hueneme Police Department shared in an official social media post celebrating the deployment.
Community Praise for K9 Giorgio
Law enforcement agencies throughout Ventura County regularly share mutual aid resources to execute search warrants, track fleeing suspects, and conduct specialized searches. Community members across the region praised Officer Magana and K9 Giorgio for their swift teamwork in keeping illegal weapons off the streets.
