Port Hueneme Teen Arrested in Connection with Shooting on Surfside Drive

A Sunday afternoon at the park turned into a crime scene after a 16 year old boy allegedly opened fire in a busy residential area of Port Hueneme. The shooting occurred on December 28 around 4 31 p.m. near Miranda Park. Thanks to a rapid response from the Port Hueneme Police Department the suspect was captured just minutes after the shots were fired.
Gunfire Targeted at Occupied Vehicle
Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of South Surfside Drive after receiving multiple 911 calls about a man firing a handgun near Lot F of the park. While no victims have come forward with injuries investigators believe the gunfire was directed at a brown sedan that was driving along Surfside Drive at the time. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation but the brazen nature of the attack in broad daylight has rattled the local community.
Witnesses provided a description of the shooter and officers quickly spotted a teen matching that description heading northbound on a nearby bike path. The 16 year old was stopped and detained without incident. During a sweep of the area police discovered a discarded handgun along the bike path which they believe was used in the attack.
Arrest and Weapons Charges
The teenager, a resident of Port Hueneme, was arrested on several serious counts. These include discharging a firearm, possession of a firearm, and possession of a high capacity magazine. Because of his age he was also charged with being a juvenile committing crimes and was subsequently booked into Juvenile Hall.
The Port Hueneme Police Department is still looking for the occupants of the brown sedan and any other witnesses who may have been at Miranda Park on Sunday. They are asking anyone with cell phone footage or information to contact the department. While no one was physically hurt in this incident authorities are treating the case with the utmost urgency to prevent further retaliatory violence in the area.
