Senior Iranian Official Rejects U.S. Talks After Airstrike

TEHRAN — Ali Larijani, a senior Iranian powerbroker, issued a sharp rebuke of President Donald Trump on Sunday. He declared that Iran will not negotiate with the United States following the airstrike that killed the longtime cleric and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Larijani is a veteran regime insider who has emerged as a central figure in Iran’s provisional leadership structure. He accused Washington of aggression and warned that American military bases in the region could become targets if used in further operations against Tehran. His remarks signal a hardening of Iran’s posture amid rapidly escalating regional tensions.
The Rebuke of "Delusional Fantasies"
Larijani delivered his message through a series of posts on X and public remarks. He directly addressed President Trump in his statements.
"Trump plunged the region into chaos with his delusional fantasies," Larijani wrote. "We will not negotiate."
He accused the United States and Israel of attempting to destabilize Iran. He warned that Tehran would retaliate for what it views as unprovoked aggression. He stated that the Iranian nation is defending itself and that the armed forces of Iran did not initiate the aggression.
Warning to Regional Neighbors
Larijani also warned neighboring countries hosting U.S. military bases. He stated those facilities could become legitimate targets.
"To the countries of the region: We are not seeking to attack you," he wrote. "But when the bases located in your country are used against us, we will target those bases."
He argued that American bases operating within foreign territory effectively function as U.S. soil during active operations.
Leadership Vacuum in Tehran
Larijani’s statements came just hours after confirmation that Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in a U.S. strike. Iran’s top leadership has been significantly impacted. Multiple senior commanders were reportedly killed. Retaliatory missile launches are currently underway.
Larijani has moved swiftly to establish a provisional governing framework within the security structure of Iran. He is a former parliament speaker and longtime figure in the Supreme National Security Council. He has deep ties to nuclear diplomacy and regional alliances.
A Pragmatic Past and Hardline Present
Larijani previously struck a more pragmatic tone on nuclear negotiations. Earlier this year, he suggested that U.S. concerns over nuclear weapons were resolvable if properly addressed. Following the death of Khamenei, he has publicly rejected renewed talks with Washington.
International Fallout and Sanctions
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned Larijani earlier this year. The department cited his role in responding to anti-government protests and regional security coordination.
Russia condemned the killing of Khamenei. Regional tensions have surged. Israel reported killing dozens of senior Iranian commanders. The situation remains fluid as both sides signal resolve.
Future Outlook
Iran has vowed retaliation. The United States has not indicated plans for direct negotiations. Regional allies are bracing for further escalation. The emergence of Larijani as a central decision maker suggests Tehran is consolidating power quickly and adopting a confrontational stance.
