We trust experts with our lives when we seek a rush of adrenaline. That trust broke in the worst way possible on a bridge in Brazil.

WHAT HAPPENED

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas went to the "Skeleton Bridge" in Limeira for a rope jump. She was 21 years old. She expected a safe thrill under the watch of pros.

Video shows the instructors launching her from the bridge. But they forgot the most important part. She was not tied to a safety line when she went over the edge.

She fell straight to the ground. Another person had backed out of the jump just minutes before this happened. Police have now arrested three men for the mistake.

What the evidence shows

  • 3 instructors arrested for the fall.
  • Victim was 21 years old.
  • Location: Skeleton Bridge in Limeira, Brazil.
  • Charge: Involuntary manslaughter.
  • Evidence: Video footage shows the launch without a rope.

THE BIGGER QUESTION

How does a team of "experts" miss the only thing that keeps a person alive? We need to ask if these thrill-seeking groups have any real oversight.

Is this a case of a business moving too fast to make money? When we pay for adventure, we assume there is a safety net, but this story shows that might not be true.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW

Local police are looking into the business practices of this group. This tragedy will likely lead to much stricter rules for extreme sports in the area.

For now, the bridge is a crime scene. Families in the area are calling for the site to be shut down for good to prevent more loss of life.

WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW

  1. Did the equipment fail or was it never put on her body?
  2. What training did these instructors actually have to lead jumps?
  3. Why did the other client decide not to jump just moments before?
