A college professor blamed a grieving father for his teen son's brutal murder
Howard University's Stacey Patton faces intense backlash after claiming 17-year-old Austin Metcalf died because he violated a Black teenager's personal space.
When a child is killed, we look for ways to make sense of the pain. But a college professor's online post has left a grieving family facing blame instead of comfort.
WHAT HAPPENED
It started at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, during a rain delay in 2025. Seventeen-year-old Austin Metcalf asked Karmelo Anthony to leave his team's tent. Anthony refused to go.
Witnesses say Metcalf pushed Anthony during the tense argument. Anthony then stabbed Metcalf in the chest. In June 2026, a court found Anthony guilty of murder and sent him to prison for 35 years.
After the trial, Howard University professor Stacey Patton wrote a public letter to Metcalf's father. She wrote that the teen died because his father did not teach him to respect Black boys' boundaries. People across the country quickly called her out for blaming the dead teen.
WHAT THE EVIDENCE SHOWS
Austin Metcalf was 17 years old when he was stabbed in the chest.
- The fight took place inside a team tent during a rain storm.
- Karmelo Anthony received a 35-year prison sentence for murder.
- Professor Stacey Patton published her views on her Substack page.
- Critics say Patton ignored the use of a deadly weapon to focus on race.
THE BIGGER QUESTION
When we talk about race and tragedy, where does common sense stop? Patton tried to frame a violent crime as a lesson in "policing Black bodies." But by starting the story at the push instead of the knife, she made a killer look like the victim.
We must ask ourselves if school theories are blinding us to basic care for others. Can we fight bias without losing our grip on right and wrong?
THE OTHER SIDE
Patton and her supporters argue that young Black men face constant threats to their safety and personal space. They believe that even small physical acts of force can feel like a threat to life, which changes how they react.
Based on the court's swift murder conviction and the evidence of a knife fight over a tent, this argument is extremely weak in justifying a fatal stabbing.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW
This debate is widening the gap between academic circles and everyday people who want safe schools. Parents are now worried that political debates are overshadowing the safety of their children at school sports events.
WHAT WE STILL DON'T KNOW
Will Howard University take any action against the professor for her online comments?
- How did the school track meet security fail to prevent a student from bringing a knife?
- Will the Metcalf family take legal steps against the professor for her post?
